This Year’s Study: The Gospel of Mark

SMM Bible Study group invites you to join them in the study of the Gospel of Mark. By delving into this gospel you will deepen your understanding of the Bible in your spiritual life as a devoted Catholic. The study is open to everyone – new and veteran learners alike! These 18 sessions will transform your life by deepening your faith and gifting you with friendships.

We welcome back Sr. Marianne Race, CSJ as our knowledgeable and faith-filled leader. Sr. Marianne was the Director of Biblical Study and Travel Programs at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago from 1991-2000. She co-authored In This Place: Reflections on the Land of the Gospels for the Liturgical Cycles. She has also written various articles for the biblical journal The Bible Today.

When is Bible Study?

Bible Study meets weekly on Tuesdays for nine weeks in the fall and nine weeks in the winter. Both morning (9:15-11:15 am) and evening sessions (7:00- 9:00 pm) are offered. The fall semester starts September 10, 2019 and the winter session begins January 7, 2020. Sessions are held in the COR Center.

How Can I Register?

To register for Bible Study, please call 630-369-0777. Your study book can be picked up in the parish office after August 15th for a donation of $75.00.

What happens at Bible Study?

Classes typically start with a prayer and an introduction that includes some background material and/or interesting facts about people, places, or customs of the times. Next, small groups review and discuss the homework questions for about an hour. The remaining class time combines lecture and a question and answer session concerning the Scripture being studied. Bible Study, which lasts approximately 2 hours, concludes with a blessing.

What if I’ve never read or studied the Bible?

It’s okay! No specific academic or Bible Study background is needed. Many first-time participants who come to Bible Study have never read or studied Scripture on their own. We all come to learn!

How do I prepare for class?

Preparation includes reading the assigned Scripture passages and answering “homework” questions that are in the Study Guide that you receive when you register for Bible Study.

What if I don’t have time to prepare as suggested for class?

You are encouraged to attend even if you didn’t have time to do your homework. The Spirit still works and inspires us!
