The Art & Environment Coordinator supports the aesthetic vision of the Catholic Church, which holds that “genuine sacred art draws man to adoration, to prayer, and to the love of God, Creator and Savior, the Holy One and Sanctifier” (CCC 2502).
What You’ll Do
Working closely with the Pastor and Liturgy Coordinator, the Art & Environment Coordinator is responsible for tending to the decorative and environmental needs of the parish in order to enhance the Sunday experience and other special liturgies. This position especially involves tending to liturgical changes during Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, as well as Ordinary Time. The Coordinator should also build and maintain relationships with volunteers and assist the Christian Worship Commission when needed.
Primary duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Oversees Art and Environment in all worship areas, Narthex and Parish Center for liturgical celebrations
- Coordinates volunteer recruitment, their task delegation, training, and decorating schedule
- Plans and executes seasonal decorations – Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, Ordinary Time
- Provides consultation and assistance for special liturgies – Confirmation, First Communions, May Crowning, Pentecost, etc.
- Purchases all supplies needed for Art and Environment – fabric, flowers, tools, etc.
- Maintains the inventory of supplies and responsible for their storage
- Oversees the Art & Environment budget
- Available to offer feedback to fellow staff members in aesthetic-related matters
- Assists with special projects, such as Chapel renovation, office updates, etc.
- Attends special staff meetings & gatherings when applicable
- Attends bi-monthly Liturgy Team meetings
- Serves as a member of Christian Worship Commission
- Works with and communicates with Pastor and Liturgy Coordinator
- Position reports directly to the Liturgy Coordinator.
- Other duties as assigned by the Pastor.
Qualifications:
- Experience or education in art or design – a plus but not required
- Familiarity with liturgy & liturgical art, and working with various materials
- Committed to the teachings of the Catholic Church on sacred art and liturgy.
- Able to align with the Pastor’s vision for the parish’s aesthetics.
- Must be able to effectively communicate and collaborate with others.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must support the mission, philosophy, objectives and policies of the Catholic Church and the Diocese of Joliet, and be open to prayer & faith sharing in all aspects of work.
Compensation & Benefits:
- This part-time, non-benefited position is salaried based on an average of 10 flexible hours worked per week with a considerable increase during high liturgical seasons (Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week).
- Compensation will be $14.00-16.00/hr. Commensurate with experience.
- Pay dates are biweekly on Thursdays.
- Personal time is accrued at the rate of 1 hour earned per 40 hours worked.
